Survey for possible LD Camp
Hey everyone! As the season nears many of us are sitting in anticipation, cutting cards (hopefully), waiting for the Lafayette camp evidence to come out so we can start getting some practice rounds in. Seeing to the fact that we will all have this evidence in the next week or so, Zach Moss and Matthew Swanson forwarded the idea of having an LD camp this month. Unfortunately, RCC is not holding an LD camp as they did last year. We are currently in talks with a few DOF’s to see where we would be able to host one. Ideally, the camp wouldn’t be very long, perhaps two or three days, and would primarily consists of research-gathering and practice rounds. So, it would be of great assistance if all debaters interested in attending an LD camp use the comment section to suggest dates/locations. I for one, really want to make this happen, and I’m sure many of you do as well. In addition to posting dates and locations, it would he helpful to contact your coaches to see if they may be available to provide assistance at the camp (lecturers,lab leaders, judges for practice rounds, etc.). Let’s make this happen guys!

Yo,
Breaking news: SDSU will not be able to host a camp this year. However, I am in talks with school admin and da’ boss to get our own LD camp in So-Cal next summer in San Diego!
I know how much people would hate to come to SD for a debate camp with our horrid temperature, boring night life, and lame beaches (yes I love Irony), but someone will come to the camp I am sure.
1. I have “child care issues” from August 11-18. (In this case, the child is 2 years old and weighs 115 pounds, and likes to run away from home, but that’s another story.)
2. Again, with respect and love – I don’t think debaters need another face-to-face card-cutting orgy in August.
I have already cut about 3,000 cards myself (I guessed right on the topic.. thanks again, Danny), and I’m sure others have done/are doing the same. My guess is that Otterbein will generate at least ten times that many. And – if the issue is just “more research,” that can easily be dealt with Online.
AND PLEASE DON’T FORGET THE VIDEO-DEBATE FEATURE DANNY HAS SET UP – it seems to me that it would be perfect vehicle for practice/demonstration debates by those who are currently the “best-prepared.”
3. What I HAD HOPED was that such a camp would be used: (a) To teach new folks the basic NFA-LD debate fundamentals;
(b) To work with “the veterans” to synthesize all those already-cut cards into coherent cases and/or arguments. (Both in law and in debate, I find the typical, verbose “25-page BRIEF” fo be oxymoronic to the max.) and,
(c) To get coaches and judges together to swap ideas on: (i) how to make our tournaments – and there are a lot of them [YAY!!!] – the best exerience possible, and (ii) how best to expand the activity.
Just sayin… But my offer to help remains open.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

Mike Marse talked about having at least a 1 day camp in October right before his Cal Baptist tournament. It would probably be geared mostly towards novices.
My preference would be to have it a bit later than August – perhaps sometime in September – that way the schools that start later could recruit their new debaters to attend.
We could also look into something online… using web cams…
