Forming an Executive Committee

Well, SoCal-LD.net seems like it’s getting bigger and bigger and this year NFA-LD was the largest its ever been in Southern California. To make the site work more effectively for our growing community I think it’s time to form an executive committee.

Here are my ideas but they are not exhaustive nor final – I’d like this to grow from the community.

Executive Committee Me (Danny Cantrell), 2 students and 2 other coaches. I would not vote on any executive committee decisions except to break ties. My hope is that the committee would work through consensus (ie, making decisions that are 4-0 rather than 2-2). The committee would come up with a constitution to spell out it’s functions but right now I’m thinking…

Duties

1) Run and Manage the Southern California LD Championships
2) Create, Administer, and Award the Sweepstakes
3) Post regularly to the site (1 post/week per member).
4) Promote and encourage schools to participate in the event

If you have additional ideas or thoughts please post them in the comments. Given the site is geared towards Southern California only coaches and students from programs in Southern California will be eligible. If we have more than 2 coaches or 2 students run we’ll have elections.

Danny, I’ll throw my hat in the ring. I think the one post a week idea is an excellent one. I think there should also be discussions regarding biannual meetings to discuss the progress of the site.

Sounds good to me. I am also interested. Something Danny and I have spoken of is that our executive committee meetings could take place online in the fall. Perhaps they also could run concurrently with the PSCFA Coach’s Conference.

I would also be interested in this.

My suggestion would be to have elections each summer and have members serve one-year terms. Term limits for coaches might be a good idea – perhaps you can serve no more than two terms in a row, then you have to take an off-year before you run again. That should increase turnover on the committee and help maximize the diversity of viewpoints represented.

At a minimum, I would think that in order to be eligible to run, candidates should be able to demonstrate a tangible commitment to participating in LD debate. Consistently attending and debating/coaching/judging at tournaments where LD is obviously required to be able to effectively serve the needs of the community.

This is a great idea. Hopefully the community will embrace it.

In the great tradition of debater modesty, and in all due deference to others, I’d like to nominate myself for this committee. I think everyone who knows me knows how much I want to see this event succeed.

I am for def willing to participate in this, i love this event.

Yo, Robert where are you ending up next year?

OK – for the students we have Jesus, Nick and Robert. For coaches we have Michael Miller and Marse.

Here’s what I’m thinking. There will be two year terms. For this first year we’ll stagger it.so 1 coach and 1 student will serve a 1 year term. The other coach and student will serve for a 2 year term.

Then, in a year, we’ll have elections for a new 2 year term.

Would that work?

What happens if you’re going to be graduating the year you want to run? It doesn’t make much sense to get elected and then leave a vacant spot on the committee after serving only half a term.

I’m certainly interested in participating in this as well. 2 years ago, I was really apprehensive about competing in LD, but after doing it this year, I realized how great of an event it really is.

I, too, am apprehensive about two year terms because people are unreliable.

1 – Students on the CC level would be discouraged from running because they would transfer to a different school out of the area after the 1st year (possibly). Same for 4 years who transfer here from another two year out of state, etc.

2 – is there an impeachment process? 2 years is 2 years… that is a long time for some of these people. I am not against re-election, but damn.

3 – that would also be a lack of representation for the San Diego area: Palomar, SD Mesa, Loma… one year terms allows for diversity and greater representation.

What if a Senior is elected, does their position roll over to a coaches position after they graduate?

I agree with Swanson. I think there are too many problems with the two year terms

not the problems, just that someone agrees with me

OK – one year terms is fine with me. Anyone interested please sign up by June 1st.

I think the requirements for students should be 1) having competed in one NFA-LD tournament the previous year and 2) commit to posting at least 1 post per week on the site from September through April.

For coaches it should be 1) having your team compete in at least one NFA-LD tournament the previous year and 2) commit to posting at least 1 post per week on the site from September through April.

The term will expire the last day in April and then we’ll have new elections in May…

That sounds good.

Stirling and I will be debating at the University of Concordia next year so i will be in the socal l ranks again ;) )))

OK – just to confirm I didn’t miss anyone, I have David, Robert, Nick and Jesus interested in running? If this is wrong please let me know! I’ll post in the next day or so how we’ll proceed.

is there an update on this process yet??

I will post it tomorrow. Right now I’m thinking that any student from Southern California who competed in at least 1 NFA-LD tournament last year can vote for 2 of the 4 student reps. There will be a ballot to rank 1-4 and the top two students will be elected. In the event of a tie I’ll cast the deciding vote. That work?

One of the first jobs of the committee will be to draft a constitution to iron this all out for next year =)

makes sense to me!!

that’ll work! I’ll post a few paragraphs on why I think I should be elected tomorrow. :)
