Three of my novices had their first tournament at Glendale, and got bludgeoned by El Paso. They claimed to have had a good time and learned something. One told a story about how a judge yelled at their opponent for being “too hard” on the new debater. Remember that judges normally in a close round, assign speaking points, if not the round, to the debater they like the most.
