Season Sweeps Update #3, Comments on IVC tournament
First, let me say how much I enjoyed the tournament at IVC. It emphasized education, and de-emphasized trophies. People played the game, had fun and went home smarter. I especially appreciated Gary’s narrative feedback approach before awards, where he asked various members of the audience to share their stories from the tournament. This is obviously something he picked up hosting tournaments in China, and was something we could use more of on our circuit.
Second, I have attached the newest update to the season sweeps. Of course, it is still a work in progress. Danny mentioned in the comments to the last update that we should have a 33% of the maximum ballots qualification for awards. I agree, but ran into some issues with the math. If you look at the update below, you’ll see that IVC now has 84 total ballots (and that’s without any final rounds!), which would make most of the schools ineligible at the 33% rule. It is also seems to me that ballot count is problematic given our finals verses prelim counting method. Instead, I have instituted for your perusal a 33% tournament rule. To qualify for any of the awards, the school or debater must take part in 33% of the tournaments for the year. We’ve had 4 tournaments, so that means a school or debater would have had to go to 2 tournaments to qualify. If we keep that standard, that number will likely be 3 by the SoCal LD Championships, since it looks like we will have had 7 tournaments by then. If we go to the Cool Off, the number would still be 3 since we’ll have 9 tournaments.
In any case, it is what it is. Until we change it.

Hi Ian. As outlined here only tournaments within Southern California will count. Since the goal is to reward NFA-LD in Southern California I think that makes sense. We want people debating and participating in the event here. While I’m excited that UoP is doing LD and that many people will be in LD at UoP I want the award to focus on Southern California.

Thanks Mike for doing this grueling work – I know from NPDA sweepstakes is NO fun and takes a lot of will power to get through the work!
I like the 33% rule – that seems to be a good compromise for this year and we can work on something for next year over the summer if we want to keep doing this award =)
