Inherency – taken care of?

Calendar

I was going through one the links in the past post and found this gem for inherency:

Smith 2009
[Scott | Kansas City Star $500 billion plan to upgrade U.S. transportation hits federal pothole, p.online | 07/13/2009 | Accessed 08-05-09 ~ http://www.kansascity.com/business/story/1322647.html !DJC]

Unfortunately, Oberstar’s bill has collided with a proposal put forth by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. The secretary wants Congress to pass an 18-month highway authorization bill that would put off a comprehensive, long-term solution and instead perpetuate a piecemeal mix of half-measures and temporary remedies for our nation’s transportation woes.

As long as your case is a comprehensive, long term solution you should be set. I could also see using this card, in a rather snarky way, as an inherency press against any small case which is a “piecemeal mix of half-measures and temporary remedies.” You could make the argument that’s current policy. =)

One good “inherency gem” deserves another. I think it can be legitimately
argued that the Obama administration opposes ANY/ALL new transportation
infrastructure “reforms” at this time. This is particularly true because of Obama’s pledge to hold the line of taxes and to reinstitute PAYGO. (And Congressmen Oberstar and Mica are madder than hell about it.)

New York Times
June 18, 2009:

“LaHood originally called for the 18-month bill TO COME WITH SOME
REFORM, but when pressed today by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) he granted
that any major changes to the bill would be difficult, given the tight
timeframe lawmakers are working with. ‘I believe we can have discussions;
whether we can get to the point where we can include these as part of the fix of the Highway Trust Fund? We’ll have to see,’ he said.” (Emphasis added.)

It seems pretty obvious that Obama is doing the same thing with transportation infrastructure reform as he is doing with immigration reform. “I’m all for it… but not this session.”
