Some Neg Ground?
US-Russian relations have been cooling lately due to oil issues – anyone seen 13 days recently? Add on to that the events in Georgia and I’m seeing a potentially big Russia Disadvantage with this topic a la the China DA (actual DA) on the Greater Horn topic. Thesis: Right now Russia & Cuba have warming relationships but the US policy steps in the way which makes Russia mad… You know what happens when Russia gets mad…
Here is an article from Pravda that I just came across:
“It is an open secret that the West has been establishing a buffer zone around Russia during the recent years, getting European, Baltic states, Ukraine and the Caucasus involved in the process. The expansion of the Russian military presence abroad, particularly in Cuba, could become a response to US-led activities,” RIA Novosti quoted Ivashov as saying.

well shit, there goes my Alice in Wonderland DA . . I was going to have fun sneaking up on people with Russia this year but thats not going to happen anymore.
Here is a sketch of my Russia DA
Uniqueness: Russia would go to cold or hot war with US
Link: 1) plan puts US on good side with Cuba 2) Russian/Cuban relations decide if russia can put bombers in Cuba
Internal: Russia needs Cuba for national defense = Cold war
impact: cold war wipes out LA OR goes global, Iran/Kosovo/NK/whatever else
I let you poke holes wherever and shore them up in my 6 min rebuttal and watch the time drain in your 2ar – any version of this would do.
Right now there are so many news briefs coming out of Russia and Cuba that they don’t even need/want Cuba it makes the DA a little. . . lackluster in my opinion. Also, Castro pissed no one seemed to ask him on top of Russia moving out without giving a 30 day notice on vacating their apartment last time (lame joke? yeah, right idea? indeed).
My advice is to beef up on AT’s for Aff and on Neg I would go for it if all you see is Lafayette in their tub and you want to relive Fall ’08. I ran it all PSCFA on opp and I saw some1 run it on opp in sems (elim 1)?? I wont say whose running what but its out there. However, I think if anyone knew and decided to cut Russia as of 2 days before PSCFA they could have had terminal defense on it in 2 cards and moved on to extend case. Opp would have been like, damn – kick, collapse to T or 2nd DA on Rainwater Harvesting.
I see the issue of significance on the Russia thing. I see it relying on more T honestly. Everyone runs T on CE because its what we do. Now, you switch to the Sig ^ T and run it to shore up ground. Either you bite your not sig or the DA, obviously you go and bite the DA so T gets kicked – but you still have to respond to it in the 1ar, huge time skew (can we do something about that someday btw?) and out of the 1NR you get 10 more cards on Russia kills babies and wants to burn apple pie!
People are still going to run their CE T for no reason, I don’t know why either, then a T on Sig ^ before finally going to 1-2 DA’s. . . case never gets touched. Maybe I came from the wrong policy league in HS but dude, I love me some case debate!
at the end of the day, if someone wants to trade for some russia stuffs I got and they have something sweet I will see what we can work out.
