Finding articles
Google news provides an excellent service of ‘alerts.’ These are automatic emails to any email account based on certain keywords. Right after the Cuba topic was announced I setup an alert for Cuba and everyday Google sends me a email with major articles about Cuba. It’s great for debate because you can setup tons of alerts for all the different affirmative and negative cases you are debating – someone running the embargo case? setup an alert for “cuba embargo” and get every new article delivered to your email.
I find the once a day digest version the best – once a week was too many articles to go through effectively but the once-a-day is usually about 10 articles that I can quickly scan and see if any are helpful.
There is sometimes a question about the quality of the sources through google news – they are not usually your mainstream ABC, NBC, CNN, NYT, LAT, etc.. sources. However, there is no reason you have to use only this research. I always tell my students that wikipedia/google is a good place to start your research but never end it.
For example, the second article listed below talks about how Cuba is meeting the Millennium Development Goals. While I don’t know how credible the “Tribuna de La Habana” will sound in a round (even if it is incredibly credible) – you could probably read the article below and then find more research in more readily known sources that talk about the same idea:
“The truth is that, if there is political willingness, many things can be done. Cuba is working very seriously to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. In fact, several of these goals have already been fully attained and there is significant improvement in others,” the UN
official noted.
Searching for “Millennium Development Goals AND Cuba” will probably provide you lots of good quality research.
Are there other ways that you let the internet do the hard work of researching for you?
