Must Act Now Cards
When I competed in C-X debate in high school we always ended our cases with what we called the Must Act Now Cards. We wanted to really drive home the need to enact our policy NOW and it always seemed like a good way to end our case on a high note that really drove home our ideas. It especially worked with non-technical and non-flow judges. Remember the recency principle from your basic comm class – what someone says last will stick more than what they say first.
As I started looking into research for this topic I went to the USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development) which does a lot of the work handing out assistance to Africa. I came across this article entitled “STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK FOR AFRICA” – a good read. Specifically, though, this card caught my attention as a great – Must Act Now card. Enjoy and please send any thing you find helpful my way! info@socal-ld.net
Many countries in Africa are poised to achieve significant progress

FOR AFRICA, February 2006, http://pdf.usaid.gov/pdf_docs/PDACG573.pdf)
Because of the overall low income and poor quality of life that characterizes most countries in Africa, it will be many years before more African countries will have sufficient internal resources to graduate from foreign assistance, even among the top performers in economic management and good governance. Nonetheless, many countries are poised to achieve significant progress in moving along the development continuum. Strategically-programmed assistance will place more countries on a stable footing, resulting in increased incomes, improved democratic governance and a better quality of life over much of the continent.
