Student Reactions

I asked some of the students who competed at the Cougar classic for their reaction before their first NFA-LD tournament.

Maria (Cerritos):

Competing for the NFA-LD at Azusa Pacific was definitely a whole lot of fun. I strongly believe that this event is one of the most educational ones. Not only do you have to be constantly prepared for what your opponent prepared against you but you will also learn to challenge yourself to a whole different level. Instead of looking for reasons why my partner and I lost, I simply can look at my flow sheet alone and determine what mistakes I made. With that knowledge, I can teach myself to become a better debater and speaker.
Everyone should try it…

Irma Lopez (Cerritos):

My first evidence debate experience was fantastic. I enjoyed it a lot. During the practices, I was confused, sometimes I though it was easy and sometimes I though it was very difficult. But at the time I was debating, every thing was easier that I thought. I think the key of the success in evidence debate is to have the case well prepared. With it, at least we have something to say. Also, it is very important to keep your ears open and hear carefully everything your opponent says. These are the two most important things we need in order to develop and enjoy the event.  After the first round of evidence debate, I found that I have learned a lot in the speech team because I debated with confidence.

One of the reasons I liked this event is because I notice that that is the way lawyers debate in the court rooms, and finding myself debating in this style, makes me very happy. Another interesting point is that because we are put in spot, we develop a critical speedy thinking skill, which helps us in real life. We learn to be organized. But most important, we learn tremendously about the topic we are debating.

Now, I am preparing my second case related to the same topic, which will help me to continuing learning about the same topic at the time that I will help me to improve my communication skills.
