Global Warming
One of the reasons I think this year’s NFA-LD topic is so great for new debaters is that almost all of your debates will include a discussion of global warming. This type of generic position (which may get boring by the end of the year) allows new competitors to dive into most rounds with some positions that will almost always work. That should give you a lot of confidence as you head to your first tournament. Before you have a few rounds to know what teams are running to go get case specific evidence, you can almost always fall back on the global warming debate.
Furthermore, since it’s such a huge issue, there are tons of articles out there on Global Warming. A recent issue of the Economist had a huge section on climate change. Here are some cards on global warming good that may come in handy as the negative. Again, these cards are somewhat old, but should give you an idea on what to look for in your research.
